Frequently Asked Questions
Why did the organizations decide to merge?
The decision to bring together Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada and Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Canada as one united organization is rooted in the expectation that together, we’ll be able to make an even greater difference in the communities we support, increasing our ability to grant wishes by 25 per cent more each year. United as one organization, we will leverage our collective best practices, relationships and strengths, to improve our ability to fundraise, attract and retain the best talent, and ultimately, bring us closer to our goal of granting the wish of every eligible child in Canada.
This union is the responsible move as we look to the future and broaden our scope to sustain our reach and help more children. It is the result of extensive, collaborative and thoughtful planning involving expert advisors and leadership from both organizations. While there have been some conversations about bringing our organizations together in the past, we wanted to be confident that the resulting organization would be greater than the sum of its parts. We are confident that now is the right time to join forces as one united organization, increasing our ability to grant wishes by 25 per cent more each year.
How will you be branding the new organization moving forward?
The new organization will operate under the Make-A-Wish® Canada brand in order to leverage the substantial benefits of the Make-A-Wish® global network. Although we will operate under “Make-A-Wish Canada” branding in order to retain the benefits of a distinctive, internationally-recognized brand and its network, our operations will be a true blend of the best of both legacy organizations.
How do I donate during the transition?
Donations can continue to be made at childrenswish.ca, makeawish.ca, or thepowerofonewish.ca. As of October 1, 2019, all proceeds will go to the new legal entity. As one united organization, we will be able to leverage those resources and donations to help even more children with life-threatening illnesses realize their most heartfelt wish, giving them the strength to endure their treatments and build resilience.
How many more wishes will be able to be granted through this process?
Together, we aim to grant approximately 2,600 wishes in 2022. That’s almost 1,000 more wishes than we granted independently in 2018. With up to 6,000 children in Canada facing a critical illness and complex medical needs each year, this is an important step toward our goal of ensuring every eligible wish is granted.
Will this have any impact on the quality of wishes?
Together, we will leverage our collective best practices, relationships and strengths, to ultimately bring us closer to our goal of granting the wish of every eligible child in Canada. Our combined networks will allow us to grant even more wishes and to do so with even better service and greater options.
Will this be an opportunity to leverage the announcement in order to generate more donations?
Our immediate focus is ensuring a smooth integration of both organizations and successfully stewarding our existing donors and relationships. At the same time, we absolutely believe that our story will be more compelling than ever, and we look forward to making that case to Canadians.
How will this merger come into effect from an operational perspective? What’s the integration plan?
This is the result of extensive, collaborative and thoughtful planning involving expert advisors and leadership from both organizations. We are committed to working collaboratively throughout this process to ensure continued seamless delivery of service.
What are the next steps?
On October 1, 2019, we legally became one unified organization. Over the course of the coming months, we will work towards the smooth integration of both organizations to ensure continued seamless delivery of service. Ultimately, we’ll be able to make an even greater difference in the communities we support, increasing our ability to grant wishes by 25 per cent more each year.
